Charlie Sykes on Indiana Republicans ‘Rebuking Trump:’ It Was ‘Remarkable,’ There Was a Real Element of Extortion
EXCERPT:
SYKES: “It shouldn’t be remarkable, but it is. We haven’t seen this in the last 10 years. You know, as you listen to that, imagine what if members of Congress had said that? What if governors had said that over the last 10 years? You know, how different our environment would be? Look, this was a humiliating defeat for Donald Trump. But what the Republicans did in Indiana was extraordinary, because, as you laid out, you cannot overstate the amount of pressure that was put on them, the threats against them, the efforts to intimidate them. I think you used the appropriate word. There was a real element of extortion, the threats that we were hearing, that Donald Trump would cut off all the federal aid to the entire state of Indiana, cut off their road aid, to close down various facilities. And yet, they stood up.”
