Kim Strassel: Maybe Putin Made a Mistake Saying He’s Open to Peace, Turning Down Every Idea Could Turn ‘Trump in a Different Direction’
RUSH EXCERPT:
STRASSEL: "That is always the risk. One thing to bear in mind about Donald Trump is he is honest about his desire to have peace. I think when we look at whether or not, what side is going to fall on a down year is he going to give too much to Vladimir Putin? Putin isn’t proving himself to be intransigent I don’t think in the end that will go over very well with Donald Trump. I don’t think he will give everything to get a deal. Some good things have come out of this so far. One it’s broken loose a little bit of an inertia there’s always a coalition and the willing and in Europe who wanted to start thinking about security guarantees for Ukraine but they held back because they were not sure of the United States position. The fact trumpets said the United States is helped in some way begins to come together to make a plan. Putin might have made a mistake here and that opening the door to suggest he is open to a peace deal and then it being the one who turns down every idea again and again, I think that puts more burden on him to be the one who does something and if he doesn’t that could turn Donald Trump very much in a different direction."
