Peter Baker: The Big, Beautiful Bill Is Complicated Because They’re Trying to Do All in This Single Piece of Legislation

‘Mike Johnson now talking about a second reconciliation bill to try to get at some of the savings’

RUSH EXCERPT:
BAKER: "Well, look, a majority of the Senate can overrule a parliamentarian’s ruling, but there’s some reluctance to do that because, of course, the parliamentarian’s rulings protect Republicans when they’re in the minority, just as it does in effect, Democrats when in the morning. And there was the parliamentarian helps keep out things from democratic bills when they’re in charge that Republicans don’t think belong there either. So they’re reluctant to do that because it kind of chips away at the power of the filibuster. Senator thune, the majority leader in the in the Senate, seemed to believe he can finagle this. He can finesse this by finding other language to get through at least some of these priorities and pass muster with the parliamentarian by just changing around how you frame the initiatives. And that may get get them to enough places. You also see Mike Johnson now talking about a second reconciliation bill to try to get at some of the savings, the cost savings that might not be included in this one. So people would have a chance to vote again to make statements if they want to do that. So they’ll probably end up finding a way to get there. But it is one more roadblock, and one more time explains how complicated what they’re trying to do is all in this one single piece of legislation."
