Peter Baker: There Is Not a Lot of Support Outside of the Republican Base for the Big, Beautiful Bill
RUSH EXCERPT:
BAKER: "Well It’s a Popular bill inside the building that President Trump was speaking in. Beyond that, it’s not quite so much according to polls. Polls suggest that there, in fact, is not a lot of support outside of the Republican base for this bill. And there are plenty of measures in there that Democrats will, you know, happily pound away at Republicans for if they end up voting for what seems to be the emerging compromise here. You know, this is important for the president. What’s really striking about this bill in some ways is it’s the first time and the only time really, since he became president again in January, that he’s gone to Congress for anything. Everything else he’s been doing has been through his own executive power or claims of executive power. And this is the first time he’s actually had to manage the complicated, narrow majorities that he has in the Congress. And I think that it’s a test, obviously, of his control over the party. So far, he has shown that he’s still the dominant voice among Republicans, even those who are balking at this bill, I think, are looking for ways to come around to eventually supporting. They don’t want to be on Trump’s bad side. So he’s you know, he’s got an advantage here. It may not be done by July 4th because for all the reasons said, it’s extremely complicated to put it all together."
