Historian Greg Grandin Jokes About ‘Gulf of America’: ‘All You Have To Do Is Put an Accent on It and Everybody Would Be Happy’
‘To rename the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America is really an argument within Donald Trump’s own head’
EXCERPT:
GRANDIN: “The United States and Latin America have had a long relationship going back centuries and before that it was the tension between the Spanish Empire and the British Empire. But to rename the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America is really an argument within Donald Trump's own head because Latin Americans themselves understand themselves as Americans. Hence the title of the book, America, América, right? And so it's -- it's not particularly -- I mean obviously it's a little obnoxious to rename -- to unilaterally rename the Gulf of Mexico which it has been called since the 1500s the Gulf of America. But all you have to do is put an accent on it and everybody would be happy." (Laughter)
