Conscious Advertising Network’s Murray Laments Lack of Censorship to Combat Climate Disinformation
EXCERPT:
MURRAY: “The climate information ecosystem has been compromised by the relentless onslaught of disinformation campaigns orchestrated and amplified by powerful actors. The impacts of this is that it's obstructed climate action, it's deepened division, it's reduced trust, and it's obstructed progress on climate action. And that can be seen nowhere more clearly than in instances of extreme weather, like floods in Brazil and Spain, hurricanes in the U.S. and in the Caribbean, where we've seen emergency efforts hampered by disinformation efforts. And big tech, legacy media, influential PR firms, and the advertising industry all have played a role within this, and often have prioritized profit over truth. But I'm here representing a global coalition that came together before COP26 in 2021, recognizing that there was themes and threats developing, trying to disrupt the negotiations and climate action more broadly. This coalition has now grown to over 60 organizations that are from -- represented all around the world, organizations in Sri Lanka and Brazil, U.K., U.S., and -- well, from -- from right across. And since 2021, we've seen, as you said, the IPCC acknowledge the issue of disinformation and its impacts. The E.U. has recognized this. And now, of course, this initiative as well.”
