U.N. Climate Spox: Framing ‘Climate Action as Elitist’ Is Disinformation
EXCERPT:
SAIER: “The initiative from Brazil and UNESCO is very important to us. It's a very important work especially ahead of COP30 in Belém next year in Brazil, and Brazil is the initiator to join forces to tackle this major and multi-acted challenge of climate information integrity. We see climate mis and disinformation increasingly taking over social media spaces. We are seeing more and more content undermining climate action through narratives that frame climate action as elitist and disconnected from public needs. We need to ensure we avoid giving the impression that we are focused on stuff that we just disagree with. Better to say we are focused on things that are actually factually wrong. So U.N. Climate Change is very pleased and happy that this initiative was launched and we are part of the steering committee so we provide advice here. From the process perspective ensuring integrity of scientific data and facts on climate change is the backbone of this multilateral process and informs the political decision making in the end, and that's why it is key that information is just and sound.”
