Bill McGurn: President Biden’s D-Day Speech ‘Will Be Forgotten in Two or Three Weeks’
EXCERPT:
MCGURN: “Yeah, I would say, watching the speech today, Joe Biden had a very well written speech. He delivered it pretty well. I know there’s concerns about, you know, mispronouncing words and so forth. But the words and stuff were fine. The reason we remember Reagan’s speech — I was living in Europe at the time, and I visited just a few days after. We remember his speech, one, because it was well written. Because there’s constant with the man, what he stood for and because of his record. He came to office proposing a military buildup to meet the threat. He deployed Euromissiles. He armed the Afghans. He confronted communism wherever it was. And those were tough, brave decisions. And the speech reflected that, the man and the message were one. I don’t think Joe Biden has that backup record. So the words are fine. But you know, he’s telling Ukraine, I think he’s right. It’s a challenge of our day. But to give them weapons and say, oh, here’s what you could shoot at, and here’s what you can’t — imagine if Eisenhower had those restrictions from when he was going through. I think it’s — it’s why the speech will be forgotten, unlike Peggy Noonan’s classic, which is still read today. Joe Biden’s will be forgotten in two or three weeks.”
