NEC Dir. Brainard: We’ve Been Refilling the SPR in a Way that I Think ‘Has Been Smart’

BRAINARD: "You know, I think what is important, though, is the president knows that for Americans, gas prices are a very important, often weekly expense, so to see gas prices coming below $3.50 is a very positive thing. And we recognize, in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, that it was important to give that relief to consumers, so the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has been an incredibly important tool. We’ve been refilling it in a way that, as you noted, I think has been smart, and we’ll continue to be very focused on that. The president will focus on gas, he's very focused on grocery costs, he’s been calling for big grocers to bring prices down and we actually are seeing many of those grocery chains now answering the call with price reductions on thousands of items. So that will be a continued focus for the president, as it is for so many families around the country."
