Bill Weir on Climate: ‘Dr. King Didn’t Say I Have a Nightmare’

‘We still subsidize big oil and fossil fuel companies to the tune of trillions of dollars’

EXCERPT:

WEIR: “If you ask the average American to guess what percentage of countrymen and women care about this issue, want to do something about it, most people guess between 30 and 40%. In reality, it’s 66 to 80%. We’re surrounded by allies we don't know we have because folks don’t talk about this enough. And I think we talk about it the wrong way. Coming at it from the politically charged words of climate change alienates people. But if you connect over your favorite hiking trail, a fishing hole, the way you build your community in a more sustainable way, 'Hey, what if our kids went to school on electric school buses so we wouldn't have to breathe these diesel fuels, then they could plug the classroom in after dark.' Dr. King didn’t say, 'I have a nightmare. People were living the nightmare.' Not enough of us talk about the dream of building a cleaner, more sustainable world. And the tools are readily available right now."
