STAVRIDIS: “I just have to play that sequence in my mind in front of the first Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, General Eisenhower, who went on to be a president, two-term president of the United States. He would be appalled and astounded at language like that. It’s so foolish and counterproductive. You know, Alicia, we’ve gone from Ronald Reagan standing up and saying ‘Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall,’ and he could do that because NATO won the Cold War. Now we hear a presidential candidate say ‘Mr. Putin, attack NATO, do whatever you want to them if they don’t pay their dues.’ And by the way, there are no dues in NATO. This is not Mar-a-Lago country club.”
