MSNBC’s Bradley: A Lot of Folks in Lebanon No Longer Want to Fight with Hamas Against Israel
EXCERPT:
BRADLEY: “But I can tell you that here in Lebanon, you know, I used to live here, I think you used to live here, I believe you spent a lot of time here in Lebanon, this country just isn't what it used to be. Its support for Hezbollah isn’t what it used to be. A lot of folks here don’t want to see their country in a constant state of war with Israel. They’ve sacrificed so much in fighting against Israel and supporting Hezbollah here within their borders, and that means there might not be the appetite for Hezbollah to once again wage an all-out war like they did back in 2006 against Israel, because it's cost this country and these people so much. So even though they’re supporting the Palestinians, there’s still a lot of solidarity for the Palestinians, the folks that I've been talking to here say they really don’t want to see Hezbollah fighting against Israel. They don’t want to see the rest of the region piling on behind Hamas and fighting against Israel. There just isn’t that kind of appetite because really, people here, particularly here in Lebanon, they are poor and they're getting poor. If you look behind me, this city, you know, it used to be lit up, there used to be lights all the time, all night long. Now when I drive around the streets, it’s dark. There isn't the energy, there isn’t the money to fund a lot of the electricity here. This city, this country is a shadow of its former self. That's why when Hamas chose this very moment to launch this comprehensive attack against Israel, it might find itself a little bit lonelier than before."
