Fmr. Advisor on Afghanistan: The Military Has Been Providing a Rosier Picture than Was the Case to Sustain Afghan War

‘I think these administrations work under the shadow of 9/11’

EXCERPT:

NASR: "There'’s no doubt that the idea that we're turning the corner, that we're doing better, that the Taliban are on the run was wrong. And I think these administrations worked under the shadow of 9/11 where presidents, particularly Democratic presidents and politicians, were very afraid of appearing to be soft on the war on terror and therefore didn’t want to make the hard decisions of not giving the military what it wanted. And the military was providing a much rosier picture than was the case in order to sustain its campaign in Afghanistan.”
