‘Stop AAPI Hate’ Founder Uses Anti-Asian Violence to Lecture Asians About Their ‘Anti-Blackness’ and ‘White Adjacency’
EXCERPT:
KULKARNI: "We have significant levels of anti-blackness in our community, and actually, Toni Morrison spoke about this years ago in the 1990s in a piece she wrote on immigration, which is that sadly, immigrants come to the United States often and understand right away the racial hierarchy that we have in our nation. And so they know that if they want upward mobility, if they want economic security, they need to align themselves with whites, essentially. And so you see a lot of that sort of white adjacency in our community or efforts to strive toward white adjacency. And so what happens then is, there is building on what happens in mainstream media and social media, this effort to target African American — African Americans as perpetrators. And I will tell you that while we don't collect ethnic specific data on perpetrators, from reading the 6,600 plus incidents, we know that it is a very small minority that are African American.”
