Olivia Enos on Hong Kong: The U.S. Should Always Stand on the Side of Freedom
EXCERPT:
ENOS: "Well, of course, you’ve heard the President saying that because the negotiations are ongoing. The U.S. cannot be outspoken in its support for Hong Kong, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s in U.S. interest to see freedom advance in any part of the world, but especially in areas where the people themselves have expressed their desire for freedom, had expressed their desire for reform and are practicing thing in really practical, tangible ways, as was demonstrated through the election this past weekend, that they can responsibly handle democratic freedoms. And I think that the U.S. needs to be very outspoken no matter what it has on the line with trade negotiations and should always stand on the side of freedom. That's been a long-term U.S.' historic role, both in Asia, but all over the globe and that should continue to be true."
