Jane Harman: An Imploded North Korea Is Worse for China
EXCERPT:
HARMAN: "Well Kim Jong-un is committed over everything else to regime survival. The Kim dynasty has survived for 30 year -- for 70 years, he’s the grandson, and his father made an identical trip in 2000 by train, same kind of train to Beijing to meet with Xi’s predecessor. So, I think that’s his commitment. I think china is committed to two things, one, staying relevant in the conversation that deals with this issue, but number two, in assuring the survival of North Korea. And the reason I think they want to ensure the survival of North Korea is because an imploded North Korea is worse for China. It also means that South Korea aligned with the west would be a threat to them. So, I think for once interests are aligned and I think it’s a very good development, especially if John Bolton is about to become national security adviser, somebody who had at least talked about preemptive war with North Korea, which I think everyone else thinks is a terrible idea."
