Kirby: You Can Have Unwavering Support for Israel But Take Note of the Way in Which They’re Conducting These Operations

‘Both things can be true’

EXCERPT:

GUTHRIE: “To that end, the president, when he went to Israel, he has called his support for Israel rock-solid and unwavering. Now it seems Israel is on a very short leash with this administration. How do you reconcile those two things?"
KIRBY: "Both things can be true."
GUTHRIE: "How."
KIRBY: "You can continue to have a rock-solid, unwavering support for Israel because of the neighborhood they’re living in and the threats they’re facing, but take issue with the way in which they’re conducting these particular operations. That’s the discussion they had yesterday. The president made it clear there has been too many civilian casualties. There is too much risk to humanitarian aid workers. There's not enough aid getting in. And we have to get a cease-fire in place so we can get the hostages released. There is negotiations starting here in Cairo over the weekend — or re-starting, I should say, in Cairo over the weekend. The president urged the prime minister to attend those negotiations and to try to close on this hostage deal as quickly as possible."
