MELVIN: “Congressman Clyburn, to hear President Trump yesterday refer to the Senate majority leader — excuse me, minority leader and the House minority leader with Chuck and Nancy, do you get the sense there’s some sort of new camaraderie between the White House and Democratic leadership?”
CLYBURN: “Well, I don’t know. Last night I was sitting with some of my colleagues from New York and one of them, Yvette Clarke, said to me, because we were talking about this, and Yvette said they are not strangers, speaking of President Trump and leader Schumer. So they are not strangers. They’ve known each other for a long time. I don’t know, maybe some of that has carried over Nancy Pelosi as well.”
MELVIN: “The President’s comment about no action against DREAMers with work permits for six months, do you take that as a sign that something big could happen as it relates to the 800,000 so-called DREAMers in this country?”
CLYBURN: “I know there’s an environment now for something big to happen. And I think that for the Speaker of the House the say that this is something he wants to see get done, I know leader Pelosi wants to see it get done, and Schumer is very passionate about this. And I do know Kentucky a little bit, it’s a little bit like South Carolina, so leader McConnell ought to have his farmers feeling better as well as some other people in his state. And so I think the atmosphere is here for us to do something in a very positive way and I am very passionate about the DREAMers as well. As you know, Craig, I used to run the farm worker program in South Carolina in my other life and so I know what commitment so many of these people have not just to making a living in this country but to helping protect the values and security of this country. And so they love this country and many of them, this is the only country they have ever known. And for us to hold the children responsible for the sins of their parents defies who and what we are as a nation. And those people who believe in the fundamentalism of Christianity and Judaism ought the practice what we say we preach.”
