GLOBAL WARMING

good afternoon everyone thank ░░░░░░░░ miss had a guard ░░░░░░░░ the introduction thank you ░░░░░░░░ see forty in the ░░░░░░░░ of Copenhagen for welcoming ░░░░░░░░ and all of our ░░░░░░░░ everyone in this movement ░░░░░░░░ your city and as ░░░░░░░░ d especially like to ░░░░░░░░ the activists and advocates ░░░░░░░░ peoples scientists and climate ░░░░░░░░ who are largely responsible ░░░░░░░░ making this moment happen ░░░░░░░░ d also like to ░░░░░░░░ the mayor s officials ░░░░░░░░ every day people who ░░░░░░░░ joining us here and ░░░░░░░░ from afar today I ░░░░░░░░ honestly I m a ░░░░░░░░ bit surprised and incredibly ░░░░░░░░ to be invited here ░░░░░░░░ to speak on the ░░░░░░░░ of the climate crisis ░░░░░░░░ the green new deal ░░░░░░░░ back in the United ░░░░░░░░ many of us advocating ░░░░░░░░ this issue have garnered ░░░░░░░░ bit of a reputation ░░░░░░░░ troublemakers and radicals so ░░░░░░░░ that spirit I will ░░░░░░░░ waste much time and ░░░░░░░░ want to move to ░░░░░░░░ with candor Frank honesty ░░░░░░░░ and frankly scientific consensus ░░░░░░░░ s no secret that ░░░░░░░░ are meeting here today ░░░░░░░░ a very perilous juncture ░░░░░░░░ roads one of extinction ░░░░░░░░ opportunity and every decision ░░░░░░░░ make between now and ░░░░░░░░ our children s lifetimes ░░░░░░░░ determine how human life ░░░░░░░░ fair weather we saw ░░░░░░░░ suffer greatly or build ░░░░░░░░ it is our choice ░░░░░░░░ the chagrin of many ░░░░░░░░ the politicians and voters ░░░░░░░░ am sad to report ░░░░░░░░ there is no middle ░░░░░░░░ on the climate crisis ░░░░░░░░ will either address the ░░░░░░░░ meaningfully and in accordance ░░░░░░░░ scientific consensus or we ░░░░░░░░ not the statement is ░░░░░░░░ a matter of radicalism ░░░░░░░░ is a matter of ░░░░░░░░ of policy and of ░░░░░░░░ and many of the ░░░░░░░░ we make particularly as ░░░░░░░░ some policy makers will ░░░░░░░░ contribute to destruction or ░░░░░░░░ and that contribution is ░░░░░░░░ in the form of ░░░░░░░░ injustice and inequality I ░░░░░░░░ elected officials we have ░░░░░░░░ obligation to tell the ░░░░░░░░ and in many different ░░░░░░░░ and moments we have ░░░░░░░░ not on this issue ░░░░░░░░ fully and certainly not ░░░░░░░░ our policy many of ░░░░░░░░ have read the science ░░░░░░░░ been briefed by the ░░░░░░░░ s experts and have ░░░░░░░░ the projections and implications ░░░░░░░░ our communities yet we ░░░░░░░░ in broad terms as ░░░░░░░░ we do not know ░░░░░░░░ things that we now ░░░░░░░░ do not speak often ░░░░░░░░ about this crisis in ░░░░░░░░ human understandable terms and ░░░░░░░░ impulses understandable because when ░░░░░░░░ speak in what science ░░░░░░░░ in the same terms ░░░░░░░░ scientists are are urging ░░░░░░░░ to we can eat ░░░░░░░░ easily labeled as alarm ░░░░░░░░ if you are not ░░░░░░░░ man hysterical in my ░░░░░░░░ community in the United ░░░░░░░░ in New York City ░░░░░░░░ three major airports servicing ░░░░░░░░ world s most complex ░░░░░░░░ space are projected to ░░░░░░░░ flooded in part or ░░░░░░░░ by 20 80 that ░░░░░░░░ given archer contradictory and ░░░░░░░░ for optimism in our ░░░░░░░░ through the fault of ░░░░░░░░ cognitive bias which levels ░░░░░░░░ to discounting the value ░░░░░░░░ our future the year ░░░░░░░░ 80 seems like an ░░░░░░░░ but if I were ░░░░░░░░ have a child in ░░░░░░░░ next few years he ░░░░░░░░ or they will have ░░░░░░░░ contend with a world ░░░░░░░░ some of our most ░░░░░░░░ critical infrastructure goes under ░░░░░░░░ or most steeple and ░░░░░░░░ use crops struggle to ░░░░░░░░ and feed our population ░░░░░░░░ if we don t ░░░░░░░░ to think about our ░░░░░░░░ we can think about ░░░░░░░░ by 20 30 according ░░░░░░░░ researchers at the University ░░░░░░░░ Washington Madison and the ░░░░░░░░ of Oregon quote sea ░░░░░░░░ is likely to submerge ░░░░░░░░ four thousand miles of ░░░░░░░░ cable in the United ░░░░░░░░ and Gulf more than ░░░░░░░░ thousand data centers that ░░░░░░░░ servers routers and other ░░░░░░░░ by the end of ░░░░░░░░ decade and that is ░░░░░░░░ in our privilege pocket ░░░░░░░░ some of the wealthiest ░░░░░░░░ in the most privileged ░░░░░░░░ in the world money ░░░░░░░░ will not save us ░░░░░░░░ right now federal governments ░░░░░░░░ failing to act the ░░░░░░░░ States to the horror ░░░░░░░░ the world withdrew from ░░░░░░░░ Paris agreements but despite ░░░░░░░░ many of the other ░░░░░░░░ in charge of some ░░░░░░░░ the most advanced and ░░░░░░░░ economies have withdrawn from ░░░░░░░░ agreement in action not ░░░░░░░░ single one is on ░░░░░░░░ to meet their Paris ░░░░░░░░ deeper still we don ░░░░░░░░ have to project one ░░░░░░░░ into our future to ░░░░░░░░ that the climate crisis ░░░░░░░░ already here on this ░░░░░░░░ I speak to you ░░░░░░░░ as an elected official ░░░░░░░░ public figure I speak ░░░░░░░░ you as a human ░░░░░░░░ a woman whose dreams ░░░░░░░░ mother hood now tastes ░░░░░░░░ sweet because of what ░░░░░░░░ know about our children ░░░░░░░░ future and that our ░░░░░░░░ are responsible for bringing ░░░░░░░░ most dire possibilities and ░░░░░░░░ focus I speak to ░░░░░░░░ as a daughter and ░░░░░░░░ of colonized peoples who ░░░░░░░░ already begun to suffer ░░░░░░░░ two years ago one ░░░░░░░░ the deadliest disasters in ░░░░░░░░ United States struck in ░░░░░░░░ form of hurricane Maria ░░░░░░░░ change powered storm killed ░░░░░░░░ three thousand Porter Ricans ░░░░░░░░ citizens my own grandfather ░░░░░░░░ in the aftermath all ░░░░░░░░ they were living under ░░░░░░░░ rule which contributed to ░░░░░░░░ dire conditions and lack ░░░░░░░░ recovery this year we ░░░░░░░░ hurricane Dorian rex similar ░░░░░░░░ age in the rec ░░░░░░░░ ravage in the Bahamas ░░░░░░░░ that is not a ░░░░░░░░ as many have noticed ░░░░░░░░ office and noted in ░░░░░░░░ awful turn the climate ░░░░░░░░ is path is first ░░░░░░░░ those who have not ░░░░░░░░ contributed to our emissions ░░░░░░░░ least but have already ░░░░░░░░ greatly in the global ░░░░░░░░ of inequality colonization and ░░░░░░░░ stocking one injustice upon ░░░░░░░░ but this is everyone ░░░░░░░░ loss to and no ░░░░░░░░ is insulated from this ░░░░░░░░ because many of the ░░░░░░░░ ravaged and marginalized in ░░░░░░░░ current regimes the lineages ░░░░░░░░ farmers indigenous peoples and ░░░░░░░░ knit communities also have ░░░░░░░░ of many of the ░░░░░░░░ that are our solutions ░░░░░░░░ well so it is ░░░░░░░░ secret that many of ░░░░░░░░ scientific conclusions reinforce indigenous ░░░░░░░░ and practices cultivated over ░░░░░░░░ of years it is ░░░░░░░░ a coincidence that these ░░░░░░░░ get relatively little media ░░░░░░░░ and that even less ░░░░░░░░ the coverage dares to ░░░░░░░░ climate change it is ░░░░░░░░ a coincidence but the ░░░░░░░░ is controversial none of ░░░░░░░░ is a coincidence because ░░░░░░░░ change is not a ░░░░░░░░ or scientific anomaly climate ░░░░░░░░ as a consequence it ░░░░░░░░ a consequence of our ░░░░░░░░ way of life because ░░░░░░░░ is unsustainable to organize ░░░░░░░░ society as we have ░░░░░░░░ on prioritizing personal gain ░░░░░░░░ profit over any and ░░░░░░░░ human or planetary considerations ░░░░░░░░ is unsustainable to naively ░░░░░░░░ that building a wall ░░░░░░░░ shield ourselves from humanity ░░░░░░░░ collective destiny it is ░░░░░░░░ to promote amnesia around ░░░░░░░░ injustices and ignorance of ░░░░░░░░ past to abdicate responsibility ░░░░░░░░ because it was our ░░░░░░░░ who committed them and ░░░░░░░░ us our children bear ░░░░░░░░ for our inaction despite ░░░░░░░░ fact that they didn ░░░░░░░░ make the choice and ░░░░░░░░ it is unsustainable to ░░░░░░░░ to believe that our ░░░░░░░░ of run away unaccountable ░░░░░░░░ pursuit of profit who ░░░░░░░░ in the quality is ░░░░░░░░ socially destabilizing but it ░░░░░░░░ giving rise to authoritarian ░░░░░░░░ burn our forests and ░░░░░░░░ the democracies that listen ░░░░░░░░ basic science and to ░░░░░░░░ that that has nothing ░░░░░░░░ do with this it ░░░░░░░░ unsurprising that this juncture ░░░░░░░░ with the political moment ░░░░░░░░ stark contrasts that we ░░░░░░░░ choose whether this moment ░░░░░░░░ lead us to regression ░░░░░░░░ evolution authoritarianism or greater ░░░░░░░░ extraction or preservation our ░░░░░░░░ choice is to move ░░░░░░░░ a cooperative collaborative world ░░░░░░░░ aligns with scientific consensus ░░░░░░░░ economy center and benefit ░░░░░░░░ middle and lower classes ░░░░░░░░ the marginalized which is ░░░░░░░░ say most people and ░░░░░░░░ the inherent value of ░░░░░░░░ human dignity and can ░░░░░░░░ everyone to work all ░░░░░░░░ this means that rising ░░░░░░░░ the challenge of the ░░░░░░░░ crisis demands not only ░░░░░░░░ we act meeting fully ░░░░░░░░ also that we changed ░░░░░░░░ the two are inextricable ░░░░░░░░ current logic created this ░░░░░░░░ and operating in the ░░░░░░░░ way will not get ░░░░░░░░ out changing society for ░░░░░░░░ better is the most ░░░░░░░░ thing we can do ░░░░░░░░ meeting the climate crisis ░░░░░░░░ require the largest economic ░░░░░░░░ we may have ever ░░░░░░░░ to pursue as a ░░░░░░░░ species and that is ░░░░░░░░ a green new deal ░░░░░░░░ all about preserving our ░░░░░░░░ with the just transition ░░░░░░░░ on economic opportunity jobs ░░░░░░░░ justice peace and prosperity ░░░░░░░░ put to get the ░░░░░░░░ done much of the ░░░░░░░░ world the developing world ░░░░░░░░ global south all of ░░░░░░░░ will have to retrofit ░░░░░░░░ of our buildings change ░░░░░░░░ update our energy grades ░░░░░░░░ a labor pool in ░░░░░░░░ myriad of different skills ░░░░░░░░ capacities work with regions ░░░░░░░░ create just transitions for ░░░░░░░░ workers and communities and ░░░░░░░░ some of the most ░░░░░░░░ civil engineering society has ░░░░░░░░ seen and that should ░░░░░░░░ be daunting intimidating or ░░░░░░░░ us to its despair ░░░░░░░░ should be inspiring because ░░░░░░░░ is the work of ░░░░░░░░ societies and we have ░░░░░░░░ entrusted by the public ░░░░░░░░ pursue it to do ░░░░░░░░ less is to stall ░░░░░░░░ we have two choices ░░░░░░░░ move forwards or backwards ░░░░░░░░ of the places that ░░░░░░░░ require attention and investment ░░░░░░░░ are the frontline communities ░░░░░░░░ have been historically neglected ░░░░░░░░ areas poor urban areas ░░░░░░░░ lands again this is ░░░░░░░░ a coincidence or even ░░░░░░░░ form of affirmative action ░░░░░░░░ is common sense we ░░░░░░░░ already invested virtually everywhere ░░░░░░░░ and much of those ░░░░░░░░ will enjoy continued attention ░░░░░░░░ to their existing political ░░░░░░░░ economic power now we ░░░░░░░░ invest in the places ░░░░░░░░ behind to not only ░░░░░░░░ up but leapfrog to ░░░░░░░░ future and much of ░░░░░░░░ work of this scale ░░░░░░░░ been done before it ░░░░░░░░ possible we have mobilized ░░░░░░░░ a massive scale for ░░░░░░░░ and are only test ░░░░░░░░ leadership is if we ░░░░░░░░ the political will to ░░░░░░░░ on that scale for ░░░░░░░░ else at the present ░░░░░░░░ solving the climate crisis ░░░░░░░░ no longer a primarily ░░░░░░░░ question it is now ░░░░░░░░ political one the scientists ░░░░░░░░ done much of their ░░░░░░░░ and now is the ░░░░░░░░ for us to do ░░░░░░░░ just as they have ░░░░░░░░ the technologies and identify ░░░░░░░░ targets we must create ░░░░░░░░ political well the new ░░░░░░░░ centers the leadership of ░░░░░░░░ communities from minors to ░░░░░░░░ to indigenous communities working ░░░░░░░░ poor communities and urban ░░░░░░░░ alike not only because ░░░░░░░░ is the right thing ░░░░░░░░ do it is nor ░░░░░░░░ it is where we ░░░░░░░░ find solutions we can ░░░░░░░░ also because it is ░░░░░░░░ winning political coalition that ░░░░░░░░ empower change the green ░░░░░░░░ deal is an economic ░░░░░░░░ for the many that ░░░░░░░░ with the current profits ░░░░░░░░ planetary extraction that benefit ░░░░░░░░ very feel and with ░░░░░░░░ I think we have ░░░░░░░░ work cut out for ░░░░░░░░ but to paraphrase to ░░░░░░░░ see prior U S ░░░░░░░░ who pioneered the original ░░░░░░░░ deal fortune and time ░░░░░░░░ great economic desperation quote ░░░░░░░░ face the arduous days ░░░░░░░░ lie before us in ░░░░░░░░ warm courage of global ░░░░░░░░ with the clear consciousness ░░░░░░░░ seeking old and precious ░░░░░░░░ values we do not ░░░░░░░░ the future of essential ░░░░░░░░ people have not failed ░░░░░░░░ their need they have ░░░░░░░░ a mandate that they ░░░░░░░░ direct vigorous action they ░░░░░░░░ asked for discipline and ░░░░░░░░ under leadership they have ░░░░░░░░ us present in there ░░░░░░░░ have made us the ░░░░░░░░ instrument of their wishes ░░░░░░░░ in the spirit of ░░░░░░░░ gift we should take ░░░░░░░░ in this dedication of ░░░░░░░░ world we humbly ask ░░░░░░░░ a blessing a we ░░░░░░░░ protected each and everyone ░░░░░░░░ us and may we ░░░░░░░░ guided in the days ░░░░░░░░
