built on cotton which ░░░░░░░░ built on financing financing ░░░░░░░░ And so from that ░░░░░░░░ forward we ve been ░░░░░░░░ a discussion about capitalism ░░░░░░░░ the United States that ░░░░░░░░ in fact sorted people ░░░░░░░░ race And you can ░░░░░░░░ and so when we ░░░░░░░░ back to sort of ░░░░░░░░ public investments that we ░░░░░░░░ in people and that ░░░░░░░░ of democratic socialism that ░░░░░░░░ been challenged and difficult ░░░░░░░░ in modern times because ░░░░░░░░ out of the great ░░░░░░░░ coming out of the ░░░░░░░░ 20th century we have ░░░░░░░░ a politics that makes ░░░░░░░░ public investments giveaways to ░░░░░░░░ people WONG Exactly My ░░░░░░░░ to you would have ░░░░░░░░ also history Because the ░░░░░░░░ right We are talking ░░░░░░░░ the people that were ░░░░░░░░ first Even if you ░░░░░░░░ back to that kind ░░░░░░░░ scrappy hard scrabble we ░░░░░░░░ going to come here ░░░░░░░░ we are going to ░░░░░░░░ something and then we ░░░░░░░░ going to bring people ░░░░░░░░ treat them as non ░░░░░░░░ just piling on to ░░░░░░░░ history We have such ░░░░░░░░ history of we can ░░░░░░░░ all be equals because ░░░░░░░░ re not If you ░░░░░░░░ at Denmark everyone s ░░░░░░░░ same France ░░░░░░░░ years ago elected Bernie ░░░░░░░░ for president let s ░░░░░░░░ call Francois Hollande Let ░░░░░░░░ do a millionaires tax ░░░░░░░░ percent Let s do ░░░░░░░░ this kind of stuff ░░░░░░░░ PERRY He was serious ░░░░░░░░ want to meet a ░░░░░░░░ here you go my ░░░░░░░░ WELCH And what happened ░░░░░░░░ ve had to run ░░░░░░░░ those policies screaming because ░░░░░░░░ leave people left They ░░░░░░░░ It just backfired It ░░░░░░░░ t deliver on all ░░░░░░░░ promises But I want ░░░░░░░░ say something the history ░░░░░░░░ race is a huge ░░░░░░░░ of the history of ░░░░░░░░ country and sustained on ░░░░░░░░ But capitalism didn t ░░░░░░░░ proceed from a bunch ░░░░░░░░ people sitting around and ░░░░░░░░ how can I be ░░░░░░░░ most racist HARRIS PERRY ░░░░░░░░ WONG No crosstalk WELCH But it also proceeded ░░░░░░░░ a notion of individual ░░░░░░░░ and individual liberty And ░░░░░░░░ of the people who ░░░░░░░░ topple those racist structures ░░░░░░░░ came or were put ░░░░░░░░ it were animated just ░░░░░░░░ much by that notion ░░░░░░░░ individual crosstalk HARRIS PERRY ░░░░░░░░ isn t this WONG ░░░░░░░░ weren t individuals There ░░░░░░░░ t individuals right so ░░░░░░░░ re not saying that ░░░░░░░░ s just about race ░░░░░░░░ re saying is that ░░░░░░░░ rules those feelings didn ░░░░░░░░ apply to everybody And ░░░░░░░░ there also the idea ░░░░░░░░ immigrants So you mentioned ░░░░░░░░ accepting Syrians We are ░░░░░░░░ nation of immigrants right ░░░░░░░░ that is actually a ░░░░░░░░ of this country That ░░░░░░░░ actually a huge part ░░░░░░░░ how capitalism can work ░░░░░░░░ people and can work ░░░░░░░░ this country if you ░░░░░░░░ allowed But the bottom ░░░░░░░░ is we re human ░░░░░░░░ This is not an ░░░░░░░░ issue so much as ░░░░░░░░ is bias and fear ░░░░░░░░ resources HARRIS PERRY But ░░░░░░░░ but we are saying ░░░░░░░░ to me the issue ░░░░░░░░ the way that the ░░░░░░░░ gets baked into the ░░░░░░░░ WONG Yes exactly HARRIS ░░░░░░░░ So the capitalism operates ░░░░░░░░ our preferences which are ░░░░░░░░ which are fixed outside ░░░░░░░░ system and if racial ░░░░░░░░ is part of those ░░░░░░░░ because of history right ░░░░░░░░ we have this long ░░░░░░░░ then doesn t it ░░░░░░░░ that the system must ░░░░░░░░ have a corrective right ░░░░░░░░ if in fact we ░░░░░░░░ have a bias against ░░░░░░░░ kinds of bodies don ░░░░░░░░ we then have to ░░░░░░░░ in and correct that ░░░░░░░░ even in order to ░░░░░░░░ a free market system ░░░░░░░░ MIRON Well we might ░░░░░░░░ we have to think ░░░░░░░░ how attempts to correct ░░░░░░░░ bias will operate and ░░░░░░░░ they will be more ░░░░░░░░ or to be productive ░░░░░░░░ counterproductive So there are ░░░░░░░░ who are certainly concerned ░░░░░░░░ measures that try to ░░░░░░░░ bias like affirmative action ░░░░░░░░ to polarization lead to ░░░░░░░░ feeling angry and upset ░░░░░░░░ they think that something ░░░░░░░░ they deserve is being ░░░░░░░░ away And lead to ░░░░░░░░ accomplishments of people who ░░░░░░░░ minorities or women that ░░░░░░░░ have had those accomplishments ░░░░░░░░ and yet then people ░░░░░░░░ at them and say ░░░░░░░░ they just got that ░░░░░░░░ of affirmative HARRIS PERRY ░░░░░░░░ know But professor you ░░░░░░░░ to let me weigh ░░░░░░░░ that nobody needed affirmative ░░░░░░░░ to teach bias against ░░░░░░░░ and brown people Like ░░░░░░░░ bias is pre existing ░░░░░░░░ then affirmative action comes ░░░░░░░░ then affirmative action gets ░░░░░░░░ as discourse But it ░░░░░░░░ not as though it ░░░░░░░░ kind of like saying ░░░░░░░░ you know like all ░░░░░░░░ a sudden white folks ░░░░░░░░ to use the n ░░░░░░░░ because of hip hop ░░░░░░░░ no no it was ░░░░░░░░ had already known how ░░░░░░░░ use that word before ░░░░░░░░ They just put an ░░░░░░░░ at the end.”
