Zeke Emanuel: We’re Going to See More Children, Unfortunately, Die Because of These Outbreaks Due to Low Measles Vaccination Rate

SCARBOROUGH Our next guest ░░░░░░░░ calling it an atrocious ░░░░░░░░ that demands an aggressive ░░░░░░░░ Former Obama White House ░░░░░░░░ for health policy Dr ░░░░░░░░ Emanuel joins us now ░░░░░░░░ thanks so much for ░░░░░░░░ with us Let s ░░░░░░░░ though we talked earlier ░░░░░░░░ Lemire was reading headlines ░░░░░░░░ you know measles outbreaks ░░░░░░░░ Give us a history ░░░░░░░░ when the United States ░░░░░░░░ measles and how concerned ░░░░░░░░ are now that these ░░░░░░░░ outbreaks we continue to ░░░░░░░░ them under the headlines ░░░░░░░░ We eradicated it in ░░░░░░░░ and you know it ░░░░░░░░ all because of vaccines ░░░░░░░░ vaccines work They have ░░░░░░░░ side effects and we ░░░░░░░░ t downplay those side ░░░░░░░░ but compared to their ░░░░░░░░ it s huge We ░░░░░░░░ seen hospitalizations go up ░░░░░░░░ because of measles infections ░░░░░░░░ re going to see ░░░░░░░░ spread You need about ░░░░░░░░ of the population of ░░░░░░░░ vaccinated for it to ░░░░░░░░ herd immunity We re ░░░░░░░░ near that as your ░░░░░░░░ pointed out So I ░░░░░░░░ we re going to ░░░░░░░░ an outbreak there But ░░░░░░░░ s not just there ░░░░░░░░ have lots of other ░░░░░░░░ pertussis whooping cough We ░░░░░░░░ going to see more ░░░░░░░░ of that And with ░░░░░░░░ downsizing we re going ░░░░░░░░ see a lot of ░░░░░░░░ problems The collection of ░░░░░░░░ is not going to ░░░░░░░░ so reliable RFK Jr ░░░░░░░░ to attack chronic illnesses ░░░░░░░░ he s undercutting the ░░░░░░░░ which has done a ░░░░░░░░ good job of combating ░░░░░░░░ important chronic illnesses like ░░░░░░░░ We need more of ░░░░░░░░ not less of it ░░░░░░░░ Dr Emanuel it s ░░░░░░░░ Psaki I think one ░░░░░░░░ the challenges everybody isn ░░░░░░░░ a health expert like ░░░░░░░░ and sometimes people think ░░░░░░░░ measles that won t ░░░░░░░░ me That won t ░░░░░░░░ my community None of ░░░░░░░░ things may If I ░░░░░░░░ it correctly kids are ░░░░░░░░ are not fully vaccinated ░░░░░░░░ measles until I think ░░░░░░░░ re 18 months old ░░░░░░░░ you correct me Tell ░░░░░░░░ kind of how could ░░░░░░░░ like this impact communities ░░░░░░░░ preschools and schools in ░░░░░░░░ way that people watching ░░░░░░░░ better understand EMANUEL Well ░░░░░░░░ what happens is you ░░░░░░░░ one infected child coming ░░░░░░░░ a preschool with 30 ░░░░░░░░ 40 other kids The ░░░░░░░░ you know goes into ░░░░░░░░ air hangs out there ░░░░░░░░ infect a lot of ░░░░░░░░ kids They ll come ░░░░░░░░ with illness Some of ░░░░░░░░ will get seriously ill ░░░░░░░░ require hospitalization And if ░░░░░░░░ have a 70 immunization ░░░░░░░░ there are a lot ░░░░░░░░ kids in that room ░░░░░░░░ are going to get ░░░░░░░░ and then they re ░░░░░░░░ to bring it home ░░░░░░░░ their parents might not ░░░░░░░░ fully immunized anymore their ░░░░░░░░ and sisters might not ░░░░░░░░ immunized because the parents ░░░░░░░░ changed their philosophy This ░░░░░░░░ how it spreads And ░░░░░░░░ we ve seen recently ░░░░░░░░ know people getting on ░░░░░░░░ getting on trains going ░░░░░░░░ crowded airports and crowded ░░░░░░░░ stations and spreading this ░░░░░░░░ These are again we ░░░░░░░░ there s a good ░░░░░░░░ we have all these ░░░░░░░░ because parents really stopped ░░░░░░░░ in the 50s 60s ░░░░░░░░ 70s of all these ░░░░░░░░ diseases I don t ░░░░░░░░ Trump really understands how ░░░░░░░░ parents feared polio and ░░░░░░░░ lined up their children ░░░░░░░░ get polio vaccines because ░░░░░░░░ were worried every summer ░░░░░░░░ might get paralyzed they ░░░░░░░░ get on an iron ░░░░░░░░ People really really you ░░░░░░░░ we ve become so ░░░░░░░░ because we never we ░░░░░░░░ t seen measles outbreaks ░░░░░░░░ every so often there ░░░░░░░░ a big outbreak of ░░░░░░░░ infectious disease and then ░░░░░░░░ get reminded of why ░░░░░░░░ have these very valuable ░░░░░░░░ And children die as ░░░░░░░░ ve seen in Texas ░░░░░░░░ we re going to ░░░░░░░░ more children unfortunately die ░░░░░░░░ of these outbreaks LEMIRE ░░░░░░░░ and yet so preventable.”
