MACCALLUM With that we ░░░░░░░░ in Daniel Elwell former ░░░░░░░░ deputy and acting administrator ░░░░░░░░ is also a former ░░░░░░░░ Force and commercial pilot ░░░░░░░░ just a wealth of ░░░░░░░░ with all of this ░░░░░░░░ you know we re ░░░░░░░░ sort of looking at ░░░░░░░░ video And I think ░░░░░░░░ re going to learn ░░░░░░░░ more from these passengers ░░░░░░░░ some of them I ░░░░░░░░ are still quite in ░░░░░░░░ I mean look at ░░░░░░░░ upside down plane on ░░░░░░░░ tarmac What goes through ░░░░░░░░ mind as a pilot ░░░░░░░░ what the dynamic here ░░░░░░░░ and how this could ░░░░░░░░ happened ELWELL Hi Martha ░░░░░░░░ for having me I ░░░░░░░░ at that and it ░░░░░░░░ every pilot s worst ░░░░░░░░ Now having seen the ░░░░░░░░ and having a pretty ░░░░░░░░ idea of the conditions ░░░░░░░░ the ground it s ░░░░░░░░ little bit clearer about ░░░░░░░░ it happened And it ░░░░░░░░ incredibly fortunate that there ░░░░░░░░ no fatalities and nobody ░░░░░░░░ critically injured which is ░░░░░░░░ testament of course to ░░░░░░░░ first responders and the ░░░░░░░░ work of the flight ░░░░░░░░ and the design of ░░░░░░░░ aircraft and the skill ░░░░░░░░ the pilots as well ░░░░░░░░ So what do you ░░░░░░░░ You know do you ░░░░░░░░ error in this video ░░░░░░░░ the part of the ░░░░░░░░ or the part of ░░░░░░░░ controllers who were giving ░░░░░░░░ the go ahead on ░░░░░░░░ runway ELWELL Well it ░░░░░░░░ far too early to ░░░░░░░░ assigning error but just ░░░░░░░░ at what we know ░░░░░░░░ winds are stated by ░░░░░░░░ controller for the aircraft ░░░░░░░░ it approaches the runway ░░░░░░░░ particular aircraft has I ░░░░░░░░ a 27 knot cross ░░░░░░░░ direct cross wind limit ░░░░░░░░ it s unclear to ░░░░░░░░ based on the direction ░░░░░░░░ the gust velocity that ░░░░░░░░ stated on the tapes ░░░░░░░░ you know that limit ░░░░░░░░ met or exceeded And ░░░░░░░░ also appears as you ░░░░░░░░ at the video from ░░░░░░░░ side the airplane impacted ░░░░░░░░ a flare which is ░░░░░░░░ normal sequence as you ░░░░░░░░ in cross the threshold ░░░░░░░░ the throttles and begin ░░░░░░░░ flare the aircraft Of ░░░░░░░░ things are different in ░░░░░░░░ gusty and very windy ░░░░░░░░ you modify your landing ░░░░░░░░ a little bit His ░░░░░░░░ his right wing is ░░░░░░░░ It s which is ░░░░░░░░ be expected coming towards ░░░░░░░░ runway Which is the ░░░░░░░░ control you would do ░░░░░░░░ a strong cross wind ░░░░░░░░ t appear that he ░░░░░░░░ that bank out and ░░░░░░░░ not doesn t appear ░░░░░░░░ be a flare Now ░░░░░░░░ could be caused by ░░░░░░░░ number of things including ░░░░░░░░ control issues or flaps ░░░░░░░░ slat issues I didn ░░░░░░░░ fly this airplane I ░░░░░░░░ not familiar with it ░░░░░░░░ yeah it s very ░░░░░░░░ Way too early to ░░░░░░░░ any sort of error ░░░░░░░░ blame MACCALLUM It s ░░░░░░░░ stunning situation I think ░░░░░░░░ I said we all ░░░░░░░░ of feel when you ░░░░░░░░ landing sometimes like something ░░░░░░░░ this could happen But ░░░░░░░░ never imagined that it ░░░░░░░░ would It s extraordinary ░░░░░░░░ images Daniel thank you ░░░░░░░░ much Daniel Elwell good ░░░░░░░░ have you with us ░░░░░░░░ ELWELL Thanks Martha Good ░░░░░░░░ see that MACCALLUM You ░░░░░░░░ Thank you.”
