BERMAN All right Just ░░░░░░░░ few minutes ago you ░░░░░░░░ FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell ░░░░░░░░ about the role that ░░░░░░░░ change has in helping ░░░░░░░░ the conditions for these ░░░░░░░░ burning out of control ░░░░░░░░ most destructive in some ░░░░░░░░ that we ve ever ░░░░░░░░ in and around Los ░░░░░░░░ So how do Americans ░░░░░░░░ about climate change and ░░░░░░░░ danger it poses Do ░░░░░░░░ feel the same way ░░░░░░░░ they used to He ░░░░░░░░ the answer CNN s ░░░░░░░░ Data Reporter Harry Enten ░░░░░░░░ here Harry ENTEN Hey ░░░░░░░░ Yeah I mean look ░░░░░░░░ don t think Americans ░░░░░░░░ making this connection And ░░░░░░░░ way we can see ░░░░░░░░ in right here and ░░░░░░░░ take a look at ░░░░░░░░ monthly change in Google ░░░░░░░░ Look at the searches ░░░░░░░░ wildfire up 2 400 ░░░░░░░░ My goodness gracious This ░░░░░░░░ the most amount of ░░░░░░░░ searching for wildfires ever ░░░░░░░░ going back since Google ░░░░░░░░ began back in 2004 ░░░░░░░░ look at climate change ░░░░░░░░ at the change It ░░░░░░░░ t go hand in ░░░░░░░░ with wildfires It s ░░░░░░░░ down It s down ░░░░░░░░ percent And I also ░░░░░░░░ in California There has ░░░░░░░░ no increase in the ░░░░░░░░ of searches for climate ░░░░░░░░ So the bottom line ░░░░░░░░ this Americans are definitely ░░░░░░░░ in learning about these ░░░░░░░░ They re interested in ░░░░░░░░ the news about the ░░░░░░░░ but they are not ░░░░░░░░ that connection BERMAN Yeah ░░░░░░░░ with climate change That ░░░░░░░░ the bottom line here ░░░░░░░░ BERMAN That s a ░░░░░░░░ key metric you re ░░░░░░░░ at there the connection ░░░░░░░░ Americans being worried about ░░░░░░░░ change What have we ░░░░░░░░ over time ENTEN Yeah ░░░░░░░░ know we have seen ░░░░░░░░ lot of extreme weather ░░░░░░░░ over the last few ░░░░░░░░ right Hurricanes heat waves ░░░░░░░░ You might expect that ░░░░░░░░ worry about climate change ░░░░░░░░ climb Climate change worry ░░░░░░░░ lot You go back ░░░░░░░░ 1991 It was 35 ░░░░░░░░ Now it was a ░░░░░░░░ bit higher in 2007 ░░░░░░░░ little bit higher in ░░░░░░░░ But look at this ░░░░░░░░ 2023 the last time ░░░░░░░░ have data 39 percent ░░░░░░░░ is not statistically significantly ░░░░░░░░ from this 35 percent ░░░░░░░░ in 1991 So despite ░░░░░░░░ these extreme weather events ░░░░░░░░ are really no more ░░░░░░░░ about climate change than ░░░░░░░░ were what is that ░░░░░░░░ nearly 35 years ago ░░░░░░░░ mean there s just ░░░░░░░░ real trend line here ░░░░░░░░ Berman BERMAN So the ░░░░░░░░ is why ENTEN Why ░░░░░░░░ are they not really ░░░░░░░░ a lot about climate ░░░░░░░░ It might be because ░░░░░░░░ feel like there s ░░░░░░░░ a whole heck of ░░░░░░░░ lot they can do ░░░░░░░░ climate change humans contribute ░░░░░░░░ great deal Again there ░░░░░░░░ no real trend line ░░░░░░░░ over the last few ░░░░░░░░ 2019 49 percent 2020 ░░░░░░░░ percent 2023 46 percent ░░░░░░░░ 45 percent That s ░░░░░░░░ down four points from ░░░░░░░░ we were back in ░░░░░░░░ And so less than ░░░░░░░░ majority of Americans believe ░░░░░░░░ humans contribute a great ░░░░░░░░ to climate change So ░░░░░░░░ bottom line is that ░░░░░░░░ a big reason why ░░░░░░░░ don t worry a ░░░░░░░░ They just don t ░░░░░░░░ like they can do ░░░░░░░░ about it BERMAN So ░░░░░░░░ trend line is going ░░░░░░░░ even as scientists say ░░░░░░░░ the intensity of these ░░░░░░░░ and these conditions are ░░░░░░░░ worse ENTEN Even as ░░░░░░░░ extreme weather goes up ░░░░░░░░ are not exactly as ░░░░░░░░ about climate change as ░░░░░░░░ necessarily once were BERMAN ░░░░░░░░ Enten thank you very ░░░░░░░░ ENTEN: “Thank you.”
