Maddow: The First Order of Business Is to Stop Them from Taking Any Uncontested Ground Right from the Outset

MADDOW All right you ░░░░░░░░ We were made for ░░░░░░░░ We were made for ░░░░░░░░ This is what we ░░░░░░░░ for Have you taken ░░░░░░░░ deep breaths Have you ░░░░░░░░ fact hydrated Have you ░░░░░░░░ any sleep I know ░░░░░░░░ didn t We didn ░░░░░░░░ either But you know ░░░░░░░░ now have got stuff ░░░░░░░░ do We really were ░░░░░░░░ some important ways as ░░░░░░░░ made for this If ░░░░░░░░ was an election that ░░░░░░░░ not just a choice ░░░░░░░░ two candidates but it ░░░░░░░░ a choice between keeping ░░░░░░░░ American system of government ░░░░░░░░ trading it in for ░░░░░░░░ strongman authoritarian system instead ░░░░░░░░ the decisive result of ░░░░░░░░ election gives us not ░░░░░░░░ an answer to the ░░░░░░░░ as to what Americans ░░░░░░░░ to do along those ░░░░░░░░ it also gives us ░░░░░░░░ really big to do ░░░░░░░░ as Americans If you ░░░░░░░░ an American citizen who ░░░░░░░░ not want to ash ░░░░░░░░ the American system of ░░░░░░░░ who doesn t want ░░░░░░░░ strongman authoritarian system where ░░░░░░░░ whole government is one ░░░░░░░░ and everything else just ░░░░░░░░ to serve him if ░░░░░░░░ is not the kind ░░░░░░░░ country that you want ░░░░░░░░ yesterday s election means ░░░░░░░░ have more to do ░░░░░░░░ your country than you ░░░░░░░░ ever done before Because ░░░░░░░░ is when the rubber ░░░░░░░░ hits the road right ░░░░░░░░ don t just flip ░░░░░░░░ switch and the American ░░░░░░░░ of government is gone ░░░░░░░░ is gone It doesn ░░░░░░░░ work like that I ░░░░░░░░ not to be boring ░░░░░░░░ for a second but ░░░░░░░░ getting very real we ░░░░░░░░ are just another one ░░░░░░░░ the list of countries ░░░░░░░░ has decided to you ░░░░░░░░ Hey what the heck ░░░░░░░░ s try the strongman ░░░░░░░░ Let s let democracy ░░░░░░░░ Let s put in ░░░░░░░░ all powerful guy instead ░░░░░░░░ how it goes There ░░░░░░░░ many more countries in ░░░░░░░░ world governed by that ░░░░░░░░ of a system than ░░░░░░░░ are governed by ours ░░░░░░░░ are the only 248 ░░░░░░░░ old multiracial pluralistic democracy ░░░░░░░░ the world And shall ░░░░░░░░ keep it A lot ░░░░░░░░ our fellow Americans say ░░░░░░░░ shouldn t Now we ░░░░░░░░ Now we know for ░░░░░░░░ But a lot of ░░░░░░░░ tens of millions of ░░░░░░░░ say we should keep ░░░░░░░░ system Which means time ░░░░░░░░ fight for it And ░░░░░░░░ Americans did fight for ░░░░░░░░ by working on this ░░░░░░░░ by trying to get ░░░░░░░░ candidate elected who was ░░░░░░░░ the Democrat and the ░░░░░░░░ d Democrat She didn ░░░░░░░░ win The strongman candidate ░░░░░░░░ instead But now history ░░░░░░░░ t end Time doesn ░░░░░░░░ stop Now we have ░░░░░░░░ benefit of knowing you ░░░░░░░░ how this has gone ░░░░░░░░ every other country that ░░░░░░░░ been through a democracy ░░░░░░░░ authoritarian transition And sadly ░░░░░░░░ are a lot of ░░░░░░░░ We have the benefit ░░░░░░░░ seeing what s happened ░░░░░░░░ those other countries though ░░░░░░░░ what we know is ░░░░░░░░ the more ground the ░░░░░░░░ takes the harder it ░░░░░░░░ to ever get that ░░░░░░░░ back And so the ░░░░░░░░ order of business is ░░░░░░░░ stop them from taking ░░░░░░░░ uncontested ground right from ░░░░░░░░ outset when it comes ░░░░░░░░ what our system of ░░░░░░░░ is and what our ░░░░░░░░ is We know from ░░░░░░░░ country s experiences that ░░░░░░░░ I mean now in ░░░░░░░░ next few weeks if ░░░░░░░░ the next few days ░░░░░░░░ are going to start ░░░░░░░░ to see how far ░░░░░░░░ country is going to ░░░░░░░░ them go without pushback ░░░░░░░░ protest And part of ░░░░░░░░ is because it s ░░░░░░░░ psychologically advantageous for them ░░░░░░░░ do this now right ░░░░░░░░ re counting on the ░░░░░░░░ the country that voted ░░░░░░░░ them the half the ░░░░░░░░ that doesn t want ░░░░░░░░ give up our system ░░░░░░░░ government they re counting ░░░░░░░░ all those tens of ░░░░░░░░ of Americans to be ░░░░░░░░ to be powerless to ░░░░░░░░ out which of course ░░░░░░░░ mean letting them do ░░░░░░░░ they want letting them ░░░░░░░░ the table What they ░░░░░░░░ don t want is ░░░░░░░░ the half the country ░░░░░░░░ voted against them the ░░░░░░░░ the country that wants ░░░░░░░░ keep our democracy what ░░░░░░░░ really don t want ░░░░░░░░ for those tens of ░░░░░░░░ of Americans to wake ░░░░░░░░ tomorrow feeling scrappy as ░░░░░░░░ feeling sure regretful about ░░░░░░░░ election outcome but also ░░░░░░░░ freed up from having ░░░░░░░░ spend all our time ░░░░░░░░ on the election so ░░░░░░░░ we can work full ░░░░░░░░ on being freakin pirates ░░░░░░░░ being a thorn in ░░░░░░░░ side to anyone who ░░░░░░░░ intends to try to ░░░░░░░░ this country into some ░░░░░░░░ tyranny What they want ░░░░░░░░ of all is to ░░░░░░░░ that half the country ░░░░░░░░ to bed sad tonight ░░░░░░░░ then woke up tomorrow ░░░░░░░░ up with a new ░░░░░░░░ of purpose knowing that ░░░░░░░░ this is what we ░░░░░░░░ on this earth to ░░░░░░░░ as American citizens in ░░░░░░░░ generation Because history did ░░░░░░░░ just end Time did ░░░░░░░░ just stop We just ░░░░░░░░ marching orders from the ░░░░░░░░ and the Electoral College ░░░░░░░░ as of today American ░░░░░░░░ who do want to ░░░░░░░░ on to democracy we ░░░░░░░░ exactly what we re ░░░░░░░░ to be spending the ░░░░░░░░ days and weeks and ░░░░░░░░ years of our life ░░░░░░░░ on And the strategic ░░░░░░░░ moves come into focus ░░░░░░░░ when you think about ░░░░░░░░ other countries have shown ░░░░░░░░ about how hard it ░░░░░░░░ to regain democratic ground ░░░░░░░░ an authoritarian leader has ░░░░░░░░ that ground.”
