[Clip starts UNKNOWN MALE ░░░░░░░░ I still haven t ░░░░░░░░ a lot of policies ░░░░░░░░ didn t tell me ░░░░░░░░ she would make the ░░░░░░░░ better UNKNOWN FEMALE 1 ░░░░░░░░ economy That s a ░░░░░░░░ that s a great ░░░░░░░░ reporter That was Harris ░░░░░░░░ FEMALE 1 What but ░░░░░░░░ what does it mean ░░░░░░░░ MALE 2 Denise what ░░░░░░░░ you fear with Harris ░░░░░░░░ H The fact that ░░░░░░░░ don t know where ░░░░░░░░ stands on different policies ░░░░░░░░ FEMALE 2 And I ░░░░░░░░ don t know Harris ░░░░░░░░ enough Her policies are ░░░░░░░░ to me UNKNOWN FEMALE ░░░░░░░░ She is going to ░░░░░░░░ wherever the wind takes ░░░░░░░░ UNKNOWN MALE 3 I ░░░░░░░░ know I don t ░░░░░░░░ that woman I mean ░░░░░░░░ don t know her ░░░░░░░░ just watching her and ░░░░░░░░ ends BRZEZINSKI Those were ░░░░░░░░ voters expressing a recurring ░░░░░░░░ that we are seeing ░░░░░░░░ lot of this election ░░░░░░░░ Skepticism about Democratic nominee ░░░░░░░░ Harris Many undecided voters ░░░░░░░░ cited the need for ░░░░░░░░ more information Despite Harris ░░░░░░░░ nearly four years as ░░░░░░░░ president debate appearance and ░░░░░░░░ media interviews it turns ░░░░░░░░ research shows this hesitation ░░░░░░░░ be more about Harris ░░░░░░░░ gender than her policies ░░░░░░░░ to explain Editor of ░░░░░░░░ Women Maggie McGrath and ░░░░░░░░ Contributor Huma Abedin She ░░░░░░░░ vice chair of Forbes ░░░░░░░░ Know Your Values 30 ░░░░░░░░ Summit Great to have ░░░░░░░░ both This is something ░░░░░░░░ tell us what your ░░░░░░░░ at Forbes Women found ░░░░░░░░ when it comes to ░░░░░░░░ assessing female leaders MCGRATH ░░░░░░░░ Mika what s really ░░░░░░░░ about this specific research ░░░░░░░░ it shows the real ░░░░░░░░ ramifications of the underrepresentation ░░░░░░░░ women in leadership Effectively ░░░░░░░░ researchers found is that ░░░░░░░░ people assess a woman ░░░░░░░░ a role she has ░░░░░░░░ held before they need ░░░░░░░░ use their imagination and ░░░░░░░░ are bad at using ░░░░░░░░ imagination according to this ░░░░░░░░ Researchers found that people ░░░░░░░░ to assess a woman ░░░░░░░░ potential even when they ░░░░░░░░ she is accomplished In ░░░░░░░░ specific study researchers looked ░░░░░░░░ almost 30 000 management ░░░░░░░░ employees at a large ░░░░░░░░ These employees had very ░░░░░░░░ performance ratings but the ░░░░░░░░ were less likely to ░░░░░░░░ promoted than their male ░░░░░░░░ In a different study ░░░░░░░░ at some 200 resumes ░░░░░░░░ wrote their resumes in ░░░░░░░░ way that emphasized their ░░░░░░░░ potential and they got ░░░░░░░░ ratings When women did ░░░░░░░░ same thing they were ░░░░░░░░ dismissed Kim Elsesser covered ░░░░░░░░ for us at Forbes ░░░░░░░░ and she says that ░░░░░░░░ is because as a ░░░░░░░░ we re not really ░░░░░░░░ to seeing a lot ░░░░░░░░ women in leadership roles ░░░░░░░░ you look at the ░░░░░░░░ P 500 only about ░░░░░░░░ CEOs are female So ░░░░░░░░ if we had more ░░░░░░░░ of female leadership people ░░░░░░░░ not need to use ░░░░░░░░ much imagination in assessing ░░░░░░░░ woman s potential to ░░░░░░░░ BRZEZINSKI So it s ░░░░░░░░ Huma we saw a ░░░░░░░░ of women in the ░░░░░░░░ groups and I take ░░░░░░░░ that this is a ░░░░░░░░ of women feeling that ░░░░░░░░ as well Is this ░░░░░░░░ bias ABEDIN I it ░░░░░░░░ as though ambition is ░░░░░░░░ a bad word when ░░░░░░░░ comes to women A ░░░░░░░░ of these Amorphous feelings ░░░░░░░░ idea that women are ░░░░░░░░ unlikable difficult some of ░░░░░░░░ other terms that came ░░░░░░░░ in that report It ░░░░░░░░ like the more accomplished ░░░░░░░░ are the more suspect ░░░░░░░░ are There was a ░░░░░░░░ called tall Poppy syndrome ░░░░░░░░ I thought was very ░░░░░░░░ the more you stand ░░░░░░░░ the more you re ░░░░░░░░ as a woman And ░░░░░░░░ be a commander in ░░░░░░░░ to be running to ░░░░░░░░ commander in chief well ░░░░░░░░ s no greater higher ░░░░░░░░ than that So I ░░░░░░░░ some part of it ░░░░░░░░ gender biased And whether ░░░░░░░░ s conscious or subconscious ░░░░░░░░ listening to some of ░░░░░░░░ undecided voters saying things ░░░░░░░░ Well I just don ░░░░░░░░ know the reason I ░░░░░░░░ don t like her ░░░░░░░░ don t know enough ░░░░░░░░ the man in the ░░░░░░░░ who basically says I ░░░░░░░░ don t know BRZEZINSKI ░░░░░░░░ ABEDIN I don t ░░░░░░░░ her And that s ░░░░░░░░ focusing on the policies ░░░░░░░░ the work she s ░░░░░░░░ to do is ever ░░░░░░░░ important these remaining days ░░░░░░░░ Not talking about those ░░░░░░░░ people but when you ░░░░░░░░ that sometimes what you ░░░░░░░░ is I just don ░░░░░░░░ want to know ABEDIN ░░░░░░░░ BRZEZINSKI Which kind of ░░░░░░░░ into what we re ░░░░░░░░ about here So Huma ░░░░░░░░ month until Election Day ░░░░░░░░ do you think the ░░░░░░░░ campaign can do to ░░░░░░░░ of push back against ░░░░░░░░ narrative and move past ░░░░░░░░ stereotypes to win over ░░░░░░░░ voters ABEDIN Well two ░░░░░░░░ into her campaign she ░░░░░░░░ to continue doing what ░░░░░░░░ s doing which is ░░░░░░░░ about her proactive message ░░░░░░░░ what she s going ░░░░░░░░ do when it comes ░░░░░░░░ the economy when it ░░░░░░░░ to making housing more ░░░░░░░░ making pharmaceutical drugs more ░░░░░░░░ for Americans The most ░░░░░░░░ research that we re ░░░░░░░░ shows that that is ░░░░░░░░ through It is neck ░░░░░░░░ neck It will continue ░░░░░░░░ be neck and neck ░░░░░░░░ think she s got ░░░░░░░░ advantage in the swing ░░░░░░░░ of having young voters ░░░░░░░░ about her And now ░░░░░░░░ needs to get them ░░░░░░░░ to the polls But ░░░░░░░░ think that affirmative message ░░░░░░░░ the economy it shows ░░░░░░░░ s chipping away ignoring ░░░░░░░░ know the broad sides ░░░░░░░░ him calling out the ░░░░░░░░ And that s and ░░░░░░░░ to me I think ░░░░░░░░ re they re doing ░░░░░░░░ very good job at ░░░░░░░░ staying focused on message ░░░░░░░░ And then Maggie what ░░░░░░░░ the big takeaway across ░░░░░░░░ board for women for ░░░░░░░░ leaders women who are ░░░░░░░░ the ladder facing a ░░░░░░░░ predicament at work MCGARTH ░░░░░░░░ Mika I think my ░░░░░░░░ takeaway is that the ░░░░░░░░ to fix biased environments ░░░░░░░░ not on those who ░░░░░░░░ most affected but on ░░░░░░░░ rest of us And ░░░░░░░░ do that in two ░░░░░░░░ big ways The first ░░░░░░░░ s quantify define and ░░░░░░░░ what exactly leadership potential ░░░░░░░░ like In a business ░░░░░░░░ this might be setting ░░░░░░░░ goals for your direct ░░░░░░░░ and then tracking their ░░░░░░░░ So you ve literally ░░░░░░░░ the record and can ░░░░░░░░ a decision based on ░░░░░░░░ The other big thing ░░░░░░░░ need to do is ░░░░░░░░ at our own stereotypes ░░░░░░░░ might be clouding our ░░░░░░░░ Lindsay Kohler is a ░░░░░░░░ Forbes Women contributor who ░░░░░░░░ written about this and ░░░░░░░░ says we should all ░░░░░░░░ an implicit association test ░░░░░░░░ measure our own biases ░░░░░░░░ can do that online ░░░░░░░░ to Project Implicit I ░░░░░░░░ it last night They ░░░░░░░░ a number of different ░░░░░░░░ and it s uncomfortable ░░░░░░░░ then once you know ░░░░░░░░ ways in which you ░░░░░░░░ biased you can work ░░░░░░░░ fix them and and ░░░░░░░░ build a more equitable ░░░░░░░░ fair future BRZEZINSKI Huma ░░░░░░░░ Maggie McGrath thank you ░░░░░░░░ much This was very ░░░░░░░░ and challenging Appreciate it ░░░░░░░░ you guys soon.”
