Mike Johnson: If Universities Cannot Keep Students Safe from Protesters Then They Don’t Deserve to Be Funded by Taxpayers

BURMAN So Mr Speaker ░░░░░░░░ for being with us ░░░░░░░░ on The Hill Johnson ░░░░░░░░ to be with you ░░░░░░░░ Appreciate the time So ░░░░░░░░ say that you could ░░░░░░░░ after the funding sources ░░░░░░░░ these universities if they ░░░░░░░░ t essentially get their ░░░░░░░░ together quickly So let ░░░░░░░░ tick through some of ░░░░░░░░ things that Congress could ░░░░░░░░ maybe tax the endowments ░░░░░░░░ federal funding for grants ░░░░░░░░ go after student loans ░░░░░░░░ is realistically right now ░░░░░░░░ the table for Congress ░░░░░░░░ you see it Johnson ░░░░░░░░ we have deputized our ░░░░░░░░ of jurisdiction There s ░░░░░░░░ number of committees that ░░░░░░░░ on some element of ░░░░░░░░ It s not just ░░░░░░░░ House Education and Workforce ░░░░░░░░ but it s also ░░░░░░░░ it s Ways and ░░░░░░░░ it s the Energy ░░░░░░░░ Commerce Committee it s ░░░░░░░░ Space and Technology Some ░░░░░░░░ the committees have jurisdiction ░░░░░░░░ the grants that are ░░░░░░░░ to these universities They ░░░░░░░░ billions of dollars billions ░░░░░░░░ dollars There s a ░░░░░░░░ of federal funding that ░░░░░░░░ its way into these ░░░░░░░░ and if they cannot ░░░░░░░░ the most basic constitutional ░░░░░░░░ the civil rights of ░░░░░░░░ students and protect them ░░░░░░░░ safety then they don ░░░░░░░░ deserve to be funded ░░░░░░░░ the taxpayers BURMAN What ░░░░░░░░ the endowments These are ░░░░░░░░ and tens and tens ░░░░░░░░ billions of dollars Johnson ░░░░░░░░ there s a lot ░░░░░░░░ discussion about whether they ░░░░░░░░ be taxed They also ░░░░░░░░ very generous tax benefits ░░░░░░░░ they operate as nonprofits ░░░░░░░░ s a lot that ░░░░░░░░ on the table there ░░░░░░░░ be a lot of ░░░░░░░░ and investigation We have ░░░░░░░░ do what we must ░░░░░░░░ to stamp this out ░░░░░░░░ anti Semitism movement is ░░░░░░░░ This is not protected ░░░░░░░░ protected free speech I ░░░░░░░░ a constitutional law attorney ░░░░░░░░ ironically used to litigate ░░░░░░░░ free speech cases okay ░░░░░░░░ is far over the ░░░░░░░░ This is inciting violence ░░░░░░░░ are physically threatening fellow ░░░░░░░░ closing campuses down occupying ░░░░░░░░ destroying property These are ░░░░░░░░ criminals and they need ░░░░░░░░ be treated as such.”
