    ACEVEDO Our Eye on ░░░░░░░░ coverage continues with a ░░░░░░░░ warning about climate change ░░░░░░░░ potentially dire consequences The ░░░░░░░░ Meteorological Association says there ░░░░░░░░ a 40 chance that ░░░░░░░░ will temporarily hit a ░░░░░░░░ threshold in the next ░░░░░░░░ years That s 1 ░░░░░░░░ degrees Celsius above pre ░░░░░░░░ levels MASON Scientists say ░░░░░░░░ that marker would dramatically ░░░░░░░░ the risk of extreme ░░░░░░░░ drought and wildfires The ░░░░░░░░ comes as three big ░░░░░░░░ companies Chevron ExxonMobil and ░░░░░░░░ all faced setbacks this ░░░░░░░░ over their role in ░░░░░░░░ change We re joined ░░░░░░░░ by CBS News meteorologist ░░░░░░░░ climate specialist Jeff Berardelli ░░░░░░░░ good morning How dire ░░░░░░░░ this actually expected to ░░░░░░░░ BERARDELLI So yeah in ░░░░░░░░ next five years it ░░░░░░░░ somewhat likely that we ░░░░░░░░ hit 1 5 degrees ░░░░░░░░ briefly temporarily That s ░░░░░░░░ 7 degrees Fahrenheit of ░░░░░░░░ since pre industrial times ░░░░░░░░ s likely to happen ░░░░░░░░ an El Nino year ░░░░░░░░ s when it s ░░░░░░░░ warm in the Pacific ░░░░░░░░ natural variations on top ░░░░░░░░ climate change Then it ░░░░░░░░ go back down But ░░░░░░░░ know this is really ░░░░░░░░ a sign that humanity ░░░░░░░░ t doing very well ░░░░░░░░ managing our global greenhouse ░░░░░░░░ And at 1 5 ░░░░░░░░ Celsius it s not ░░░░░░░░ we re going to ░░░░░░░░ off a cliff where ░░░░░░░░ all of a sudden ░░░░░░░░ going to get catastrophic ░░░░░░░░ things will progressively get ░░░░░░░░ at a much faster ░░░░░░░░ The intensity of these ░░░░░░░░ weather events will pick ░░░░░░░░ We ll see compounded ░░░░░░░░ heat waves on top ░░░░░░░░ sea level rise on ░░░░░░░░ of large hurricanes and ░░░░░░░░ hurricanes So things will ░░░░░░░░ get worse and worse ░░░░░░░░ we breach that And ░░░░░░░░ bottom line is by ░░░░░░░░ 2035 unless we really ░░░░░░░░ in our emissions very ░░░░░░░░ we re likely to ░░░░░░░░ to 1 5 degrees ░░░░░░░░ continue to increase our ░░░░░░░░ close to 2 degrees ░░░░░░░░ we have to do ░░░░░░░░ very quickly about it ░░░░░░░░ we re inevitably heading ░░░░░░░░ that direction MASON You ░░░░░░░░ that Jeff this is ░░░░░░░░ symbolic marker Why BERARDELLI ░░░░░░░░ because I mean humans ░░░░░░░░ it We chose 1 ░░░░░░░░ We chose 2 degrees ░░░░░░░░ again it s not ░░░░░░░░ tipping point It s ░░░░░░░░ like we re going ░░░░░░░░ fall off a cliff ░░░░░░░░ s just that things ░░░░░░░░ get progressively worse and ░░░░░░░░ at a faster clip ░░░░░░░░ we head toward that ░░░░░░░░ ll see bigger hurricanes ░░░░░░░░ ll see worse floods ░░░░░░░░ ll see worse wildfires ░░░░░░░░ we re probably setting ░░░░░░░░ up for a pretty ░░░░░░░░ wildfire season in the ░░░░░░░░ this year MASON Jeff ░░░░░░░░ thank you so much.”
