ANCHOR Dr Reese Halter ░░░░░░░░ a conservation biologist and ░░░░░░░░ has been working to ░░░░░░░░ the shark community and ░░░░░░░░ joins me now So ░░░░░░░░ Reese tell us why ░░░░░░░░ North Carolina seeing so ░░░░░░░░ shark attacks this year ░░░░░░░░ Good morning indecipherable and ░░░░░░░░ 4th Look the water ░░░░░░░░ their home right And ░░░░░░░░ s what we know ░░░░░░░░ oceans have been terribly ░░░░░░░░ overfished The sharks who ░░░░░░░░ the doctors of the ░░░░░░░░ are hungry So they ░░░░░░░░ coming in they re ░░░░░░░░ their bait and we ░░░░░░░░ conditions of unseasonably warm ░░░░░░░░ We have droughts and ░░░░░░░░ have less fresh water ░░░░░░░░ into the ocean the ░░░░░░░░ It s saltier And ░░░░░░░░ the bait fish are ░░░░░░░░ And we ve got ░░░░░░░░ perfect storm It s ░░░░░░░░ it s the 4th ░░░░░░░░ are going in the ░░░░░░░░ It s a cocktail ░░░░░░░░ has unfortunate outcomes ANCHOR ░░░░░░░░ are working to protect ░░░░░░░░ What kind of threats ░░░░░░░░ they facing Do they ░░░░░░░░ anything to do with ░░░░░░░░ uptick in shark bites ░░░░░░░░ North Carolina HALTER Well ░░░░░░░░ this is a disaster ░░░░░░░░ the last 15 years ░░░░░░░░ ve emptied the sea ░░░░░░░░ re talking one and ░░░░░░░░ half billion sharks we ░░░░░░░░ taken out of the ░░░░░░░░ And so the just ░░░░░░░░ this indecipherable if we ░░░░░░░░ 90 percent of the ░░░░░░░░ away from America or ░░░░░░░░ where I work our ░░░░░░░░ would grind to a ░░░░░░░░ and our societies would ░░░░░░░░ This is a very ░░░░░░░░ situation we re dealing ░░░░░░░░ It s got a ░░░░░░░░ outcome because if the ░░░░░░░░ die we die ANCHOR ░░░░░░░░ s not just the ░░░░░░░░ goers that are having ░░░░░░░░ issue because North Carolina ░░░░░░░░ are complaining much of ░░░░░░░░ catch is being eaten ░░░░░░░░ sharks Are there just ░░░░░░░░ many sharks off the ░░░░░░░░ this year HALTER No ░░░░░░░░ don t think there ░░░░░░░░ too many sharks I ░░░░░░░░ they are the remaining ░░░░░░░░ are starving I think ░░░░░░░░ ve taken their food ░░░░░░░░ I think they are ░░░░░░░░ much attracted to the ░░░░░░░░ fishing which draws extra ░░░░░░░░ into the water and ░░░░░░░░ sense it they move ░░░░░░░░ And this is an ░░░░░░░░ that their populations are ░░░░░░░░ great strife And sadly ░░░░░░░░ are in the way ░░░░░░░░ you know we say ░░░░░░░░ t be afraid be ░░░░░░░░ So when you go ░░░░░░░░ the water today and ░░░░░░░░ the way go in ░░░░░░░░ water be aware if ░░░░░░░░ see a school of ░░░░░░░░ come through you get ░░░░░░░░ of the water ANCHOR ░░░░░░░░ advice Dr Reese Halter ░░░░░░░░ so much for being ░░░░░░░░ HALTER: “Thank you.”
