Obama Decries ‘Wild, Wild West’ Media Culture that Permits Climate Skepticism

GAWANDE So how do ░░░░░░░░ move our conversation in ░░░░░░░░ way right There was ░░░░░░░░ time when scientists were ░░░░░░░░ about climate change and ░░░░░░░░ so Obama Right GAWANDE ░░░░░░░░ how do we set ░░░░░░░░ frameworks where we say ░░░░░░░░ is our time period ░░░░░░░░ we re going to ░░░░░░░░ facts and at the ░░░░░░░░ of the day we ░░░░░░░░ accept the consensus of ░░░░░░░░ How do we do ░░░░░░░░ in our current political ░░░░░░░░ Obama If I had ░░░░░░░░ perfect answer to that ░░░░░░░░ I d run for ░░░░░░░░ Laughter Look this takes ░░░░░░░░ a little bit far ░░░░░░░░ but I do think ░░░░░░░░ it s relevant to ░░░░░░░░ scientific community it s ░░░░░░░░ to our democracy citizenship ░░░░░░░░ re going to have ░░░░░░░░ rebuild within this Wild ░░░░░░░░ West of information flow ░░░░░░░░ sort of curating function ░░░░░░░░ people agree to I ░░░░░░░░ the analogy in politics ░░░░░░░░ used to be there ░░░░░░░░ three television stations and ░░░░░░░░ Cronkite is on there ░░░░░░░░ not everybody agreed and ░░░░░░░░ were always outliers who ░░░░░░░░ that it was all ░░░░░░░░ and we didn t ░░░░░░░░ land on the Moon ░░░░░░░░ Elvis is still alive ░░░░░░░░ so forth Laughter But ░░░░░░░░ that was in the ░░░░░░░░ that you bought at ░░░░░░░░ supermarket right as you ░░░░░░░░ checking out And generally ░░░░░░░░ trusted a basic body ░░░░░░░░ information It wasn t ░░░░░░░░ as democratic as it ░░░░░░░░ have been And Zoe ░░░░░░░░ exactly right that for ░░░░░░░░ on something like climate ░░░░░░░░ we ve actually been ░░░░░░░░ some interesting initiatives where ░░░░░░░░ re essentially deputizing citizens ░░░░░░░░ hand held technologies to ░░░░░░░░ recording information that then ░░░░░░░░ pooled they re becoming ░░░░░░░░ without getting the PhD ░░░░░░░░ we can do that ░░░░░░░░ a lot of other ░░░░░░░░ as well But there ░░░░░░░░ to be I think ░░░░░░░░ sort of way in ░░░░░░░░ we can sort through ░░░░░░░░ that passes some basic ░░░░░░░░ tests and those that ░░░░░░░░ have to discard because ░░░░░░░░ just don t have ░░░░░░░░ basis in anything that ░░░░░░░░ actually happening in the ░░░░░░░░ And that s hard ░░░░░░░░ do but I think ░░░░░░░░ s going to be ░░░░░░░░ it s going to ░░░░░░░░ possible I think the ░░░░░░░░ is obviously not censorship ░░░░░░░░ it s creating places ░░░░░░░░ people can say this ░░░░░░░░ reliable and I m ░░░░░░░░ able to argue about ░░░░░░░░ about facts and what ░░░░░░░░ should do about it ░░░░░░░░ still not just making ░░░░░░░░ up.”
