Evan Thomas: Trump’s an ‘Instinctive Genius’; My Worry Is ‘He Doesn’t Seem to Have Read Much’
EXCERPT:
THOMAS: "Well you know, Trump is interesting because he has no government experience and so we all kind of downplay him. He has -- obviously, he's an instinctive genius, he wouldn’t be president otherwise. And maybe he’s working things out in his own mind in some sort of Nixonian way of playing off Russia and China against each other, the kind of thing that Nixon actually did fairly brilliantly working with Henry Kissinger. So -- so, maybe that’s all happening. My worry with President-elect Trump is that he doesn’t seem to have read much or anything. You know, it’s all very instinctive and seat of the pants. Now, instinct sometimes can do good things but it seems a little bit like he’s winging it and whereas Nixon for all his flaws was deeply well read, really knew his history. He was working with Henry Kissinger that knew his history. That’s -- that a different thing."
