Axios’ Mike Allen on the Midterms: ‘Normal America Saying We Are Resilient and We Are Normal’

EXCERPT:

ALLEN: "Jonathan, one word that Joe used in the last hour, Joe said, 'Enough.' And when Willie was talking about the level set, the restoration, what we had here, Jonathan, was normal America screaming. So, over the years, Jim VandeHei and I have written about normal America reminding people. And we hear it on this show. The show captures it that 80% o people agree on 80% of things 80% of the time. And so, Jonathan, what we had on Tuesday, and Guy and I were chatting off the air, he was saying he hadn’t heard the words 'Democrat' and 'dominance' next to each other in some time. Lots of people are saying they haven’t felt this way since 2008. But Jonathan, what we saw was a rejection of incompetence, of overreach and of corruption, this normal America saying, 'We are resilient and we are normal.' And a super important takeaway for your viewers, I think over the years, a lot of your viewers, a lot of people who’ve been on this air have been worried about American institutions holding. And we’ve seen that the institutions did hold, that the courts have held back executive branch overreach. The press kept doing its job. The voters kept working on the home page of The New York Times. Right at this moment, there’s a story that’s basically a obit for election denialism. So those institutions held and it was voters saying, as they have almost every two years, like clockwork, 'Enough.'"
