GIRIDHARADAS: “You know, Joe was mentioning some of the previous years that we might compare this to, right, '94 and some of these other comparisons. And obviously, there’s a numerical comparison there to be had. I would argue what happened on Tuesday dwarfs all of those not in a numeric level, but a moral and substantive one because of what the referendum was about. This was about -- during an advanced authoritarian attempt in this country, which those other years were not about. This was about oligarchy, whether this country is run for the benefit of Donald Trump and his billionaire friends or regular people. And I think it was about whether primordial hatreds in this country should be the motive force of our public life, or the better angels of our nature. This was not about taxes or small government. This was about those fundamental things.”
