CNN: Gov. Newsom Commutes More than 500 Death Sentences in California
EXCERPT:
MICHAELSON: “Yeah, it‘s 548 people who were facing the death penalty. Now all of them have been commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Governor Newsom just putting out a letter saying that state-sanctioned killing is incompatible with California values. He says that the state cannot morally kill them. He‘s been opposed to the death penalty for some 30 years. The entire time he‘s been governor, he‘s had a moratorium in place. In fact, California has not executed anyone in over 20 years. One of the last governors who did allow executions, Governor Gray Davis, who was on with me recently, saying that he believed in victims’ rights, which is why he thought it was important to do this. And some victim rights groups are already outraged, saying that they‘re going to sue over this."
