Rep. Don Bacon on Miderms: In the Midwest, Trump, Particularly in the Purple Areas, ‘Is Underwater’

‘The biggest thing on the ballot this Tuesday is tariffs’

RUSH EXCERPT:
BACON: "Well, in the midwest, I think the president, particularly in the purple areas, is underwater quite a bit. So if you‘re a Republican running in a swing district, you got to make your case that you‘re going to vote for the district, vote your conscience, you‘re not going to be a rubber stamp that you‘re going to serve as a check and balance. If you can make that case. I think you‘ll do all right in the midwest. I think the biggest issue, or maybe the biggest thing on the on the ballot this Tuesday is tariffs. Tariffs are not popular here in the midwest. I tried telling the president that when I saw him personally. But it‘s it adds to the cost of goods. It‘s a tax on consumers. And Republicans have since the world war two have opposed tariffs or global tariffs. Anyway for that reason. And it puts us in a weird spot because the president has embraced them. He‘s embraced them since the 1980s when he was a Democrat, by the way. And so we‘ve been caught. Do you support the president or do you support the long held principles of the Republican Party going back 80 years, that we believe in free trade and free markets? I think that‘s the core issue coming up on this Tuesday."
