Brendan Greeley: We Build Arches in America to Celebrate Something, ‘What Are We Celebrating’ with Trump?
‘The question for Trump and his arch is, what is the victory?’
EXCERPT:
GREELEY: “There's this idea that, you know, we don't do arches in America because we don't have emperors. We do arches in America, like we have a history of it. The Grand Army Plaza here in New York, in Brooklyn, it's, you know, built in the 1890s. It was a celebration of the veterans of the Union Army, but it did not come from the state. It was a private movement. Washington Square Park, it was on the centenary of Washington's inauguration, right? These are things that are worth memorializing in America. The question for Trump and his arch is, what is the victory? What are we celebrating?”
