Alex Padilla: Trump DoJ Knows that List of 20,000 ‘Is Inaccurate’ But Still Threatens Election Officials of Litigation
EXCERPT:
PADILLA: "Yeah, not just about voting, but the voter registration process, list maintenance and what it was like under the first Trump Administration when it came after every state in the country saying, 'Hand me over those voter rolls.' And it was both Republican and Democratic secretaries of state that said, 'No.' I think somebody even said, 'Go jump in the lake.' But here’s the point. It says a lot about the state of the Department of Justice. They used to be about the rule of law. That’s not the case under Donald Trump. They put the political whims of the president above the rule of law. This list of 20,000, they have failed to explain what their methodology was in developing the list, number one. Number two, they have recognized publicly, repeatedly, that they know there’s U.S. citizens on that list. They know it’s inaccurate. They know it’s unreliable. But they’re — they’re not just asking elections officials in California to hold the ballots or take people off the rolls. They’re threatening elections officials with litigation if they don’t do what Donald Trump wants them to do. Look, I’m all in for maintaining election integrity and the safe and secure elections we have. Data shows massive voter fraud is not happening, voter fraud is extremely rare, but I’m also insistent on not keeping eligible Americans from staying registered to vote, casting their ballot, and having their ballots counted. That’s equally important, but that’s threatened when it’s not just a threat to elections officials, but you literally had DHS officials knocking on the doors of people on that list. Is that voter intimidation? Is that harrassment?"
