Liz Cheney: If Mitch McConnell Voted to Convict Trump, a Lot of Republicans Would’ve Followed Him
EXCERPT:
CHENEY: “I mean, there was — there was absolute understanding of what had happened. I think that, you know, what changed was a sense that people got that we don’t have to stick our necks out here because Trump’s done anyway. And that was certainly ultimately Senator McConnell's position. And if I have to sort of look back and see many moments, but one really crucial moment that led us to where we are today was Mitch McConnell not voting to convict. And I think if he had voted to convict, you would have had enough Republicans who would have followed him that, you know, he would have been convicted. And I think that that’s a real tragedy, and I think that was a political calculation of the same notion of people believed that Trump was finished and that anybody who had done what he did was simply not going to be accepted back onto the national stage, and so therefore they sort of thought, 'Well, we can get by this without having to take the tough vote.'"
