Katty Kay: ‘There Used To Be a Loud, Coordinated Voice from the Business Community in Support of Immigration’
EXCERPT:
KAY: "Which is why for years in American politics, it was the business community who were the loudest proponents of trying to bring in more workers into the United States because they realized they needed them, and even more so now, when you have a declining birth rate amongst millennials. I don’t know where we’re going to get the tax revenue from in the country that we need. If we don’t have people coming into the country who were paying their taxes, now they’ve all gone. Presumably we’ve lost all of the taxes that those people, many of them, were paying as well. So — and where is the business community? Where is another of the groups that in the age of Trump has not felt like it could speak up or should speak up loudly for its own interests and try to put a counter to the policies. One state after another, one small industry after another, when it’s politically expedient, they’ve managed to find some kind of a carveout in order to get workers when they need them. You’re seeing it now at the moment with cattle ranchers saying that they need a carveout in Kansas. Well, Kansas, guess what? Swing state. But there used to be a loud, coordinated voice from the business community in support of immigration. That was when the Republican Party and the business community were more, obviously, conservative."
