Heritage Foundation’s Carafano: Trump Is ‘Never Going to Abandon Ukraine’

‘He’s scrambled his tactics because he’s looking for something that works’

EXCERPT:

CARAFANO: “Look, I’m pretty sanguine about all this. The president has two goals. He wants a free and independent Ukraine that can defend itself and he wants to end the war. And he hasn’t changed on either one of those. But he’s scrambled up his tactics because he’s looking for something that works. And remember, he could just walk away from all of this. The — it’s the president’s personal choice to commit to try to be a peacemaker here. The reality is, is we know sanctions aren’t going to shut the Russians down. They never have. We know that this relief isn’t going to give the Russians, you know, a get-out-of-jail-free card for the economy, it’s not. So, it’s another thing to try. If it works, great. If it doesn’t work, great. But the notion that if we just keep maximum pressure on Putin, he’s going to make a deal, we know that doesn’t work. I personally think Putin is going to fight through the winter.”
