‘Shocking images there’

EXCERPT:

SCOTT: “Macron said, 'Those who destroyed must pay. Those who plundered must pay. And those who sought to bring down the republic will have to answer for it.' More than half a million people demonstrated across France yesterday, with smaller gatherings still happening tonight. Nearly 2,000 were arrested and one person died after reports of a cardiac arrest. In Lyon, the tourism office was set on fire, and in Bordeaux, government buildings were damaged. In Limoges, the 143-year-old town hall burned to the ground, shocking images there. This all started with angry students protesting learning conditions, but they were soon joined by public workers, unions and radical left-wing political groups, with fears of more nefarious actors being involved. The high cost of living, political leadership, fuel prices and underfunded public services are some the issues for this growing crowd. In Marseilles, protesters, they stormed the town hall there and attacked riot police, throwing rocks, fireworks, glass, anything they could pretty much find, More than 600 officers were injured across the country. But the biggest crowds were in Paris. Masked demonstrators burned vehicles, smashed and looted shops. The French prime minister said no one will impose their political agenda through violence. Residents say the attacks felt premeditated."
