Former Aide to Minneapolis Mayor Frey Sentenced to 33 Months for Role in Feeding Our Future Fraud Case
EXCERPT:
RASMUSSEN (voice-over): “His own lawyer called 38-year-old Abdi Nur Salah the guy who got things done inside a network of people who stole millions of taxpayer dollars during the pandemic. Salah’s LinkedIn page still identifies him as a senior policy aide to Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, but Salah left city hall in 2022, as soon as allegations surfaced that he was involved in fraud connected to Feeding Our Future. Salah pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud to avoid trial last year.”
TODER: “There was an agreement that his role in the offense was minimal.”
RASMUSSEN (voice-over): “But at sentencing, Judge NancyBrazell rejected that characterization, citing Salah’s former position as a government employee. In court, he apologized and said, ‘I should have known better. I should have known better because I was tremendously privileged.’ This summer, Salah was arrested twice on drug and DWI charges — another reason the judge cited for placing him back in custody on Thursday, even as Salah continued to minimize his role in the fraud that paid him more than $1 million.”
RASMUSSEN: “What is the message to the taxpayers who are still outraged by all of this?”
TODER: “Well, I don’t blame taxpayers or anyone who’s been defrauded to be outraged, but in this case here, in the case of my client — that’s all I can talk about — he is going big steps to get this paid back.”
