Mamdani: We Need a Very Different Approach to AI than Simply Couching It in the Language of an Arms Race with China
EXCERPT:
MAMDANI: “I'm concerned by the fact that we are finding out about this technology almost exclusively from those who are creating this technology as opposed to from any federal government regulation of the technology. It feels as if the very place where there should be urgency and decisiveness is where we are years behind even understanding the scale and the scope of what is being developed by these companies. And I continue to hope that there will be a very different approach taken to the question of Artificial Intelligence than simply couching it in the language of an arms race with China. Because the conversation is not about the supremacy of one nation over the other, the conversation has now become about Humanity and the safeguards that need to be implemented. And we also know that when the only motive at hand is profit, then there are a lot of things cast at the wayside and one of it is the consequences for people. And that is something that we are very concerned about.”
