BASS: "Sure. Well, first of all, me sitting on the panel, a mayor has never done that before. It was way above and beyond the call of duty because my responsibilities are vast, as you very well know. But given what we’re going through now, just in terms of scheduling and the intensity of the work, I’ve taken on new responsibility at the metropolitan transit authority. I’m chairing the board there, so there really wasn’t a need for me to continue. I learned what I needed to know, which is I suspected all along, and I campaigned on this five years ago, is that the system was dysfunctional. But what’s the level of dysfunction and what are the answers? It’s very clear to me now what the answer is, and that is that L.A. city needs its own system.”
