Barbara Starr on Pentagon During 9/11: ‘The Diversity of the American Military Is Its Strength’

STARR: "Well, I went out that west front door and was confronted with a wall of orange flame that rose all five stories above ground in the Pentagon and the Pentagon. And we didn‘t really know the, uh, the extent of how far the plane went. And we knew it had been a plane. We didn‘t know how far the plane had gone into the building. We didn‘t know the extent of the casualties. And as we‘re standing there, uh, it was so quick to get out that we didn‘t even have in those initial moments, the fire trucks, the ambulances, the first responders. So somebody launched a call for military people who had medical training to try and help those who were pouring out of the building on that side, who were injured. And not a moment‘s hesitation. Dozens and dozens of military people ran forward. Uh, I had met a young army officer on that side of the building who went back in to rescue a disabled member of the housekeeping staff that he knew was still inside."
