Ann Compton: ‘The President Wanted to Speak’ After 9/11 Attacks, But His Aircraft Could Not Return to Washington

COMPTON: "And it was a day, Caitlin, when people kept telling him no in the school, he said, I‘ve got to address the American people and I‘ve got to go back to Washington. And we got on the aircraft, but just then the Pentagon was hit. Well, there was no way they were going to fly that military jet into American into Washington airspace. So we flew for hours and stopped once in Louisiana, fuel plane needed fuel. And the president wanted to speak. And he did come to our camera and make a make a statement, but we weren‘t plugged into anything. We had to hand the tape off. It was when the president demanded to go back to Washington, saying he had to speak from the White House to reassure the American people. The Secret Service told him, Mr. President, that‘s not your call.
