Rep. Trahan on AI Threat: When People Who Are Building the Technology Are Raising the Alarm, We Have to Listen

‘We’ve seen models breaking out of their labs’

EXCERPT:

TRAHAN: "Well, there’s no question that when people who are building the technology are raising the alarm, we have to listen. And we’ve seen safety researchers resign, we’ve seen models breaking out of their labs. And of course, just yesterday, a report was released detailing how bad actors are trying to use this technology to create bio weapons that could cause harm at a massive scale. So when the architects are telling us that they can’t guarantee where this all goes, I think it’s it’s time for Congress to get off the sidelines. It’s past time for Congress to get off the sidelines and act. And I think that’s the whole case for the Frontier Act. Certainly, the sequencing is important. Let’s start with transparency, mandatory incident reporting, independent verification, a kill switch, if there is the risk of a catastrophe, but then move toward bolstering our cybersecurity to secure our hospitals, our national grid, and so much more that’s been presented to us in the last week. But I was on this show a while back with my Republican co-lead, Jay Obernolte from California, and I think we believe, with the urgency created this week, that the Frontier Act is the right place to start."
