Sam Stein on Iran: ‘We Endure the Pain at the Pump, But to What End Are We Doing This?’
EXCERPT:
STEIN: “I guess the only question I have is, to what end are we doing this, right? What does the offer actually look like? We had a memorandum of understanding that was pretty vague in terms of its objectives. Is the idea here regime change? Is it weapons inspectors getting access to sites? Is it ending formally the nuclear ambitions? I mean, what is the actual end game? I think that matters here because if we are going to do this long-term economic focus strategy, if we are going to just rest on an embargo, attack their oil tankers, and endure the pain at the pump, there has to be some sort of diplomatic offering. And from everything I've seen, it's unclear if there's actually diplomatic back channels happening, real diplomatic back channels, not these sort of talks here and there.”
