Newsom: California Is ‘the Tent Pole of the American Economy’

NEWSOM: “We not only expanded Medicaid, but we are only state in America providing universal health care regardless of pre-existing condition ability to pay and your immigration status. I know how offensive that is to people and I get how controversial that is. We delivered that. We delivered $20 minimum wage for fast food workers, $25 for healthcare workers, $17.40 for everybody else. We have the biggest subsidies in the country for childcare. We created a brand new grade preschool for all. We have after school for all, summer school for all. We have invested in our growth engines, our youth season CSUs, and we have a GDP that grew 40% since I’ve been governor. That’s faster than any developed nation in the world, faster than any state in the United States of America. No one comes close. And let me double down on that. We’re not only running surpluses again, but California, six of the top 10 market cap companies on Planet Earth were born in my state. The tent pole of the U.S. economy is reflected disproportionately in California, based companies. $366 billion, Wall Street Journal last week, of investment in startups in California, 4,000. That is three times more than all the other 49 states combined. The next state was net was $27 billion in New York. My point is, we have no peers. Number one in manufacturing, number one in hunting, number one in forestry jobs. I'm gonna keep going.”
