Scott Bessent Says He Gave PM Carney a ‘Verbal Beatdown’ — Canadian Businesses and Military Are Not with the PM

BESSENT: "Well, you know, we’ve had a free rider problem with Canada for a long time. Prime Minister Carney, after getting a little bit of a verbal beatdown from myself, Secretary Hegseth, said, 'Well, you’ve got to stop throwing shade to get the negotiations back on track.' Well, he’s the one who said we’re at war. But I will tell you, Canada had a great military. They were right there at the forefront on the beaches of D-Day. And what the Canadian government has done to the Canadian armed forces, if you look at the rank — ranks of NATO spending, they are near the very bottom, like, they are cellar dwellers around with Spain in terms of their military spending to GDP. And why is that? Because they were free riding. And, Sean, I will tell you, who is not with prime minister, Canadian businesses are not with the prime minister, the Canadian military is not with the prime minister. You know, he thinks that he got to office on an anti-Trump, anti-American platform, and it’s not going to work out in the long-term. So I hope that he’ll come back to the table.”
