Ro Khanna on Meta’s $18B Settlement: This Is an Important Step, But It Doesn‘t Go Far Enough
‘Meta agreed to this because the average use of a young person on Instagram is about an hour anyway’
RUSH EXCERPT:
KHANNA: "I am. I have been calling for kids online safety and standing up to the tech billionaires for years. Look, this is an important step, but it doesn‘t go far enough. Obviously, Meta agreed to this because the average use of a young person on Instagram is about an hour anyway. So they don‘t see much competitive downside from agreeing to these terms. We need to pass a law that covers all of the platforms, but more than that, we need to cover a pass. A law that covers design and Meta can still have harmful design on Instagram that is feeding junk to your kids, that is, feeding information about suicidal thoughts or eating disorders. So this is a step forward, but it is not nearly sufficient."
